Best Practices and Case Studies Portfolio: FEMA Portfolio on Disaster Mitigation
FEMA has compiled, and is making available on
at their web site,
a "Best Practices and Case Studies Portfolio" focused
on disaster mitigation. The portfolio is a collection of illustrated
stories focusing on physical measures in real world situations
to avoid or reduce damage resulting from natural hazard events.
These include examples such as elevating, retrofitting, or
relocating at-risk structures, improving drainage and land
conditions, structural retrofit, vegetation management and
flood proofing. Several examples of these best practices are
focused on code adoption and enforcement and how those actions
reduce the potential for damage associated with natural disasters.
Also included are procedural measures to reduce risk, such
as hazard mitigation planning, policy-making, education and
outreach, and facilitating the selection, design, funding,
and composition of mitigation projects.
The portfolio currently includes over 300 mitigation best
practices from across the country and has been designed to
document examples of good mitigation practices as well as
encourage others to replicate these measures in their communities,
businesses and homes.
ICC Government Relations department plans to add links from
FEMA's code related best practices portfolio to the ICC Adoption
toolkit and the ICCenews. This information should also be
reviewed and used by ICC field staff to bolster their efforts
associated with code adoption and implementation.
